The practice of removing children from Ukraine is not a gesture of goodwill with the intention of helping, but a strategically important program of the aggressor state, the Ombudsman said.
The Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, again facilitated the removal of Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied Donbass for “rehabilitation.” Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets announced this today, January 22.
“At this time, 17 children with diseases of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system were sent by plane of the Russian Ministry of Defense to the Ogonyok rehabilitation center near Moscow,” said Lubinets.
The Ombudsman added that in 2023, according to the Russian Federation, 150 Ukrainian children living in the occupied territories, which the occupiers call “new regions of Russia,” were “recovered and rehabilitated.”
“The practice of removing children from Ukraine is not a gesture of goodwill with the aim of helping, but a strategically important program of the aggressor state – when, under the guise of providing medical care, the Russian forced the citizens of Ukraine to passport. After all, a mandatory condition for treatment is the presence of a Russian passport, on Putin’s orders it was issued through a simplified procedure. So, the citizenship of Russia is imposed by force, which is contrary to international law,” the ombudsman said in a statement.
Lubinets recalled that on March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova for the deportation of Ukrainian children.
