Kyiv police reported on the morning of January 21 that residents of the Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Cherkasy regions were involved in the crime. Law enforcement officers conducted searches at the residences of the defendants, and investigations into the violators are ongoing.
On January 15, the attackers arrived in Kyiv, came to the house where the victim lives, covered the doors with postcards and demanded that the man come out to them. The attackers recorded their actions on mobile phones.
The capital’s police officers identified the participants in the incident and on January 20, carried out a number of investigative actions with them. In addition, the police seized material evidence, in particular, computer equipment and mobile phones, which were used to record the commission of an offense and plan illegal actions.
As part of the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers carry out a set of investigative and operational measures to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
Nikolov himself previously reported that on January 14, unknown people tried to break into his home, demanding that he “go serve in the army,” and they papered the apartment doors with insulting papers.
A pre-trial investigation was opened under Part 2 of Art. 171 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (influence on a journalist with the aim of preventing him from performing his professional duties or persecution in connection with his professional activities). It provides for a fine, arrest for up to six months or imprisonment for up to four years.
Nikolov specializes in exposing corruption schemes. One of his high-profile investigations was the exposure of the purchase of chicken eggs for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) at 17 hryvnia apiece.
