In early December, the relief bill failed to pass a procedural vote in the US Senate. The aid includes an additional $61 billion budget for Ukraine.
The United States’ allies and partners are inspired by Washington’s efforts to help Kyiv resist Russian aggression. Withholding aid can set an example for others. White House National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby said this on Wednesday, January 17, Ukrinform reports.
He said that Washington is grateful to all countries that, including the United States, are helping Ukraine.
“Each country decides for itself what that should look like and what’s appropriate. These are sovereign decisions,” a White House spokesman said.
Kirby emphasized that the international support for Ukraine is great, however, if the United States does not receive a new aid package, it will change the situation in the international context.
“I think we can expect some countries to follow the example of the United States if we just shut everything down, fail to approve the funding and decide we’re not going to give anything more to Ukraine,” Kirby said.
American leadership on this issue “makes a difference,” he said.
Congressmen are close to agreement on a major new financial aid package for Ukraine.
Let’s remember that the previous day, US President Joe Biden invited congressional leaders to a meeting at the White House to discuss his request for funding for Ukraine, Israel and the border.
