In Slovakia, there is a high risk of encountering a bear near cities and villages. The government calls it a potential threat.
Slovakia advocates changing European legislation to control the brown bear population. The country has announced its intentions to destroy all bears near its cities and villages. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic.
The Slovak agency noted that changes to bear population management are also being prepared in Finland, where an increase in damage to livestock is being recorded.
They also indicated that proposals for the control of wild animals are increasingly being considered by European institutions.
“At the end of 2023, the European Commission proposed to transfer wolves, whose population in the EU exceeds 20 thousand individuals, to the lowest protection category. But the situation with bears also needs to be changed in some countries, ” explained the minister.
He emphasized that this animal population should not “threaten the safety of residents of cities and villages.”
According to the Slovak State Nature Conservation Service, there are up to 1,275 brown bears in the country. The largest population is recorded in the Polyana protected landscape area, part of the Western Carpathians. There are 278 bears there.
The brown bear population density in Slovakia is set at 10 individuals per 100 km2.
We remind you that in July, in the southeastern part of the Vinnytsia region, a brown bear, listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, was seen in the fields.
In January, a black bear was “photographed” 400 times at Boulder Nature Park in Colorado.
