One sticking point is President Joe Biden’s varying authority to grant parole to migrants detained on the country’s southern border.
The issue of providing additional financial aid to Ukraine will be resolved only after the Mexican border crisis is resolved. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, announced this on Wednesday, January 17, in a briefing.
Also, he said, Republicans need answers to critical questions: what is the ultimate goal and strategy for Ukraine and how to ensure accountability in spending funds on its defense needs.
“We have to make sure that Ukraine doesn’t become another Afghanistan. You see a lot of Americans scratching their heads and asking questions about why this has to go on without proper answers. So I’m going to ask them,” Johnson said.
He also stressed that before discussing financial aid for Ukraine, the crisis with illegal migrants on the US border with Mexico must be resolved.
“Borders, borders, borders. We’ve got to protect our home, we’ve got to secure our border before we talk about anything else. I’ve said it from day one and I’ll keep saying it. And I’m sure “We must deliver this message to the American people. I spoke on the phone with the President last Thursday and I intend to meet with him in person to convey this position to him,” Johnson concluded.
As you know, on December 27, the United States announced the provision of the last package of military aid to Ukraine in 2023, worth $250 million.
