Explosions were heard near the US Embassy. Civilian casualties were reported. Iran said it attacked “spy centers.”
On the night of Tuesday, January 16, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked targets in the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, Erbili, with long-range ballistic missiles, Reuters reports.
“Ballistic missiles were used to destroy spy centers and meetings of anti-Iran terrorist groups in the region at night,” the IRGC said in a statement.
As the agency notes, citing security sources, explosions were heard in an area about 40 kilometers northeast of Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdish autonomy. They took place near the US Consulate, as well as in civilian residential buildings.
At least two people died. Five other wounded civilians were taken to a local hospital after the explosions.
Air traffic at Erbil airport was halted.
We remind you that the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was attacked by rockets on December 8, 2023. No one was killed. There have been reported indications that the strike was carried out by militants linked to Iran.
