Queen Margrethe II of Denmark officially abdicated, and her son Frederick X became the new king. This was reported by Reuters on Sunday, January 14.
Margrethe II signed an abdication document – this meant that her 55-year-old son Frederick X would automatically become king. Thus, Margrethe II ended her 52-year reign as Denmark’s longest-reigning monarch.
Queen Margrethe II became the country’s first monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate the throne. His last words after he completed the abdication procedure were: “God save the king.”
