The border between Egypt and Gaza “must be closed,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday, CNN reported.
The move would give Israel full control over the Palestinian enclave’s access to the world.
Netanyahu said Israel would not consider war until it closed the Philadelphia Corridor, a 14-kilometer strip of land that serves as a buffer zone on the border between Egypt and Gaza.
“We will destroy Hamas, we will demilitarize Gaza, but military equipment and other deadly weapons will continue to flow through this southern opening, so of course we must close it,” the Israeli prime minister said.
Egypt has previously warned Israel against military operations in the corridor, reports the Egyptian publication Ahram Online.
The state news agency, citing an unnamed source, said in October that any Israeli incursion into the Philadelphia Corridor would be considered a violation of the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
We remind you that after the completion of the military operation in Gaza, Israel will transfer power to the local administration. A similar plan was prepared by the country’s military leadership, headed by Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
