Bulgaria supplies Ukraine with operational Soviet-era weapons systems.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Todor Tagarev believes that Ukraine can win the war against Russia. He said this on Saturday, January 13, in an interview with the Voice of America.
Tagarev said that Bulgaria is providing Ukraine with Soviet-era weapon systems that work because the Ukrainian military is familiar with them and their operation does not require additional training.
He pointed out that the country’s defense industry continues to produce ammunition, small arms and light weapons, which are also used for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Tagarev emphasized that Bulgaria provides other types of assistance to Kyiv, including training military personnel and teaching foreign languages to the military.
“At Ukraine’s request, we are committed to train one infantry company at a time, but this could mean several companies a year. We also proposed that Ukraine train, for example, military doctors,” Tagarev said .
“I believe that Ukraine can win. It can restore its territorial integrity with continued support from democratic countries, including political, financial and at least military support,” said Tagarev.
He added that Ukraine needs air power to eliminate Russia’s air superiority.
“If Putin is allowed to at least partially achieve his goal, it will mean increased risks for the security of Europe and especially for the countries of the eastern part of NATO, one of which is Bulgaria. Therefore, it is in our strategic interests that Ukraine resists Russian aggression and restore territorial integrity,” said Tagarev.
Let us recall that on November 22, the National Assembly of Bulgaria ratified an agreement between the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on the provision of armored vehicles and related weapons and spare parts to Ukraine.
On December 4, Radev vetoed the document on providing military aid to Ukraine in the form of 100 armored personnel carriers.
