The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine confirmed the capture of four Ukrainians in Somalia controlled by anti-government forces. Foreign Ministry Speaker Oleg Nikolenko announced this on Facebook on Friday, January 12.
“Our citizens were members of the crew of the UN Mission in Somalia helicopter, which crashed. Their identities have been identified. Along with the Ukrainians, there were also five foreigners on board,” he said.
According to the spokesperson, the Ukrainian Embassy in Kenya and the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN in New York have already received urgent instructions from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to take the necessary steps.
“We learned all the details of the accident and seizure, the condition of the Ukrainians, establishing contact with the company that owns the helicopter to coordinate actions. We are keeping this situation under special control together with other involved departments of our state, ” added Nikolenko.
It was earlier reported that militants from the Somali group Al-Shabaab hijacked a UN helicopter when it made an emergency landing in an area controlled by the Islamist group.
President Vladimir Zelensky said four Ukrainian sailors were captured by the Houthis in Yemen.
