The Prime Minister confirmed that the British air force had carried out targeted strikes on military targets. And the Ministry of Defense said which two Houthi targets were attacked by their planes.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his country’s air force, along with the United States and supported by the Netherlands, Canada and Bahrain, carried out targeted strikes on military targets used by the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Sunak’s statement on Friday, January 12, was published by Sky news.
“The Royal Air Force conducted targeted strikes on military targets used by the Houthi rebels in Yemen,” Sunak said.
He recalled that in recent months, Houthi militants “carried out a series of dangerous and debilitating attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, threatening British ships and other ships, causing of serious disruption of an important trade route and increase in commodity prices.”
At the same time, Sunak said, despite repeated warnings from the international community, the Houthis continue to carry out attacks in the Red Sea, including against British and US warships.
“This will not be tolerated. The UK will always defend freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade. We have therefore taken limited, necessary and proportionate self-defence measures with the United States, with non-operational support from Netherlands, Canada and Bahrain, against targets associated with these attacks to undermine the Houthis’ military capabilities and protect global shipping,” the statement said.
It was also noted that the British navy continues to patrol the Red Sea as part of the multinational operation Prosperity Guardian to deter further Houthi aggression.
Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defense said four of its RAFTyphoonFGR4 aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to carry out precision strikes on two key Houthi targets. One of them was a site in Bana in northwestern Yemen, which was used to launch reconnaissance and attack drones. Another location was the airfield at Abbs, which was used to launch both cruise missiles and drones into the Red Sea.
The British Ministry of Defense emphasized that special attention is paid to minimizing any risk to the civilian population. The results of the strikes are reportedly being assessed, but early signs indicate that the Houthis’ ability to threaten commercial shipping has been hit.
We remind you that tonight it was reported that the United States and Britain are launching strikes against the Houthis. Later, US President Joe Biden issued a statement on this matter.
