The international organization’s helicopter was carrying medical equipment and was supposed to transport wounded soldiers from the Galguduud region.
Somalia’s al-Shabaab militants hijacked a United Nations helicopter when it made an emergency landing in an area controlled by the Islamist group. There were two Somalis and some foreigners on board. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, January 10, citing a military official.
“After taking off from the town of Beledweyne, a malfunction was discovered in the helicopter and it made an emergency landing near the village of Gindher, bordering Galguduud region. It was then hijacked,” the source said.
It is still being known what happened to the people from the hijacked helicopter.
Al-Shabab is known to be linked to al-Qaeda and has been waging an insurgency against the Somali government since 2006, trying to establish its own rule based on strict adherence to Sharia law.
Al-Shabab controls territory in southern and central Somalia and continues to attack civilian and military institutions.
The UN and other donors systematically aid Somalia. Thus, the UN budget for Somali humanitarian aid is 72 million euros ($77 million) annually.
Earlier it was reported that 25 children died in Somalia due to the explosion.
Let’s remember that in October in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, more than 100 people became victims of terrorist attacks. Loud explosions took place near the Ministry of Education building, located at a busy intersection.
