Petteri Orpo noted that the Finnish government has consistently decided that border security is very important.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the Russian border checkpoints will not be opened after January 14. He said this in an interview with Yle.
“I have information that nothing has changed in Russia. And I believe that the assessment of the perceived threat should remain at the same level. This, in turn, gives rise to the need for further action (restriction),” Orpo said.
He added that the government will make a new decision on the closed border in the next few days.
According to Orpo, when making a decision, the border and national security are placed on one side of the scale, and on the other, for example, the situation of Russians living in Finland.
“The government has come to the conclusion that border security is a critically important issue for us,” the prime minister emphasized.
Let’s recall that earlier the Finnish government decided to close all vehicle checkpoints at the border of the Russian Federation for the period from November 30 to December 14, 2023, two checkpoints were reopened.
Later, due to a new influx of migrants from third countries, the border was closed until January 14, 2024.
