The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, voted against approving new military aid to Ukraine because he wanted to “send a signal” to the White House.
The Speaker of the US Congress, Mike Johnson, called on the White House to announce the strategy and ultimate goal that the Joe Biden administration wants to achieve with the support of Ukraine. Republicans will be ready to vote for aid once the Joe Biden administration explains the Ukraine strategy to them. The politician said this on Sunday, January 7, in an interview with CBS.
Johnson said his voters don’t understand exactly what Biden’s policy on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is all about.
“The House Republicans who voted against the last tranche of funding want to send a message to the White House and make it clear that they are not clear to the American people. What do we want to achieve in Ukraine? What is our strategy? What is the goal?” Mike Johnson emphasized.
Johnson also said Republicans want assurances that the United States will have full control over how military aid is spent.
He recalled that the United States has $34 trillion in federal debt.
“It’s a very serious thing, to send money to Ukraine to help them in their conflict, we really have to borrow it from somewhere. And so we say we’re doing it rationally. Of course, we stand for freedom, that’s what United is about States. But we need accountability from the people who fund it,” Johnson said.
Johnson emphasized that Republicans in the House of Representatives are not against allocating aid to Ukraine, and recalled that in a meeting with President Vladimir Zelensky, he said that they are “committed to supporting the Ukrainian people, in fight for freedom and against Vladimir Putin, who is a ruthless dictator.”
At the same time, when a reporter asked if Congress could provide aid to Ukraine before February, Johnson replied that “we must ensure the security of the US borders before ensuring the security of anyone else.” At the same time, according to Johnson, if the issues of border protection and strategy for Ukraine are resolved, funding will be allocated.
Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress have reached an agreement on funding the US government through 2024.
Earlier, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that American military funding for Ukraine will not be maintained at the level of 2022-2023, as the United States pursues the goal of making Ukraine independent in matters of production and purchase of weapons.
We remind you that earlier the White House said that there was no money for new military support for Ukraine before the US Congress approved it.
