The Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-majority Senate must agree on how to distribute the funds.
Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress agreed on funding the US government in 2024. This was said on Sunday, January 7, in a statement by US President Joe Biden, published on the White House website.
The agreement brings the country one step closer to “preventing an unnecessary shutdown and protecting important national priorities,” the American leader said.
It indicates that the budget provided for the project financing meets the requirements of the White House.
“The government’s funding package eliminates deep cuts to programs that hard-working families rely on and paves the way for year-round funding bills that are in the best interests of the American people and without extreme policy,” the president said in a statement.
Biden thanked Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and fellow party member Hakeem Jeffries for their leadership on this issue.
“Now, congressional Republicans must do their job, stop threatening to shut down the government, and fulfill their primary responsibility to fund important domestic and national security priorities, including my additional request. It’s time for them to act ,” Biden concluded.
In turn, Reuters wrote that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, said that the agreement provides a total level of federal spending of $1.6 trillion.
This figure includes $886 billion for defense and $704 billion for non-defense spending.
US lawmakers are now expected to pass legislation that would codify the deal and prevent a government shutdown. Funding for about 20% of the government’s budget, including some social programs, will end on January 19, and funds for the rest of the government will run out on February 2.
Earlier, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that American military funding for Ukraine will not be maintained at the level of 2022-2023, as the United States pursues the goal of making Ukraine independent in matters of production and purchase of weapons.
We remind you that earlier the White House said that there was no money for new military support for Ukraine before the US Congress approved it.
