The President of the European Council, known for his staunch pro-Ukrainian position, has announced his intention to run for the European Parliament.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban cannot lead the European Council if its current President Charles Michel resigns. The European Union has enough time to choose another alternative. Michel himself said this in a conversation with journalists on Sunday, January 7, Reuters wrote.
“I want to make it clear that in any case a decision on my successor must be made in June, and a decision on my transfer to the European Parliament will be in July, so it will be easy for the European Council to make a decision to appoint my successor to place,” assured Charles Michel.
He noted that the European Council “has many tools” to prevent the emergence of Viktor Orban as president of this structure.
The European Council is the highest political governing body of the European Union, consisting of the heads (presidents or prime ministers) of all EU member states. The European Council is responsible for the policies of the European Union.
It is known that on January 6, the current president of the European Council, taking a pro-Ukrainian position, announced his intention to run for the European Parliament – another EU structure responsible for creating “laws ” of the EU. In this case, Michel will have to leave the post of President of the European Council early. This will certainly happen at a time when Hungary holds the rotating EU presidency. According to the rules, the head of state presiding over the EU also performs the duties of the President of the European Council if he is unable to do so. That is, in this case, this structure can be headed by Viktor Orban.
Orban vetoed a “mega package” that included aid to Ukraine, spending on migration programs, funding for the EU Solidarity Fund and defense. This document will be returned for consideration at the beginning of 2024.
