The Council discusses and expresses its opinion on issues of national defense importance.
Estonian President Alar Karis will convene a meeting of the National Defense Council on Monday. Aid to Ukraine will be discussed there. Posttimees reported this on Friday, January 5.
It is noted that the State Defense Council is an advisory body to the president, which includes the Cabinet of Ministers, Speaker of Parliament, head of the parliamentary defense commission, commander of the Defense Forces and head of the parliamentary commission on Foreign Relations.
“The upcoming meeting will discuss the security of Estonia’s borders, Russia’s aggression and aid to Ukraine,” the publication points out.
It should be noted that since 2022, Estonia has provided military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 500 million euros, which is about 1.4% of GDP. In addition, since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Estonia has provided training to more than 1,300 Ukrainian military personnel. This is approximately one sixth of the number of Estonian defense forces trained in two years.
Earlier, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur indicated what weapons Ukraine needs.
The Estonian government has approved the provision of military aid to Ukraine totaling 80 million euros.
