The hotel was uninhabitable after the fire, and the Ukrainians living there were temporarily housed in a gym nearby.
In the city of Olecko, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland, a fire broke out in a hotel where 155 refugees from Ukraine live. Ukrinform writes about this in connection with the local fire service and police, as well as the Ukrainian Consulate in Gdansk.
It is known that the fire happened on Thursday, January 4. With the help of hydraulic lift and fireman’s ladder, 28 people were evacuated from the balconies; the rest of the residents voluntarily exited the hotel.
Four people with breathing problems due to smoke were recommended by doctors to undergo testing; the victims refused hospitalization.
As a result of the fire, several rooms were burnt, as well as part of the corridor.
Oleck district police spokesman Damian Rytvinsky confirmed that the hotel is now uninhabitable, and that the Ukrainians living there have been temporarily housed in a nearby gym.
We remind you that in the summer of 2023, a 9-year-old boy from Ukraine died in a fire in a refugee camp in Germany. According to German law enforcement officials, about 250 people were in the refugee dormitory at the time of the fire.
It was previously reported that in Poland the boiler room of a school where Ukrainian refugees live is on fire.
