The chicken named Peanut, who was the record holder for the oldest age, died in December 2023. He was at least 21 years and 238 days old.
The world’s oldest chicken, Peanut, died in Michigan at the age of at least 21 years and 238 days. This was reported on the Guinness Book of Records website.
“Peanut was a close family member and I am saddened by his loss. While I understand that he lived a very long life for a chicken, I am heartbroken,” owner Marcy Darwin wrote on her blog.
It is known that after his mother abandoned him, Peanut spent the first two years of his life in a parrot cage in his owner’s dining room, and then he was moved to a chicken coop.
When he was old, he was returned to the house where he lived with his daughter Millie, who died in October 2023, she was 15 years old.
“I think Peanut was mourning the loss of his friends, old age caught up with him, and he, too, left,” said the bird’s owner.
Marcie Darwin also added that she spent the night of December 23 holding the chicken in her arms, and on Christmas Eve, she wrapped it in a blanket and carried it to bed.
“I felt his little head resting on my shoulder as he had done for years, and at around 5am his neck relaxed against my neck and I knew he had died peacefully in his sleep, his last gift to me,” the woman summed up.
