During his presidency, Trump may have violated the constitutional ban on receiving funding from foreign governments.
Donald Trump received approximately eight million dollars from foreign organizations from 20 countries during his tenure as US President. This is stated in a 155-page report by Democratic congressmen, published on Thursday, January 4, reports The Washington Post.
According to the report, the biggest payer was China, where President Trump received $5.5 million. The document argues that such payments violate a provision of the US Constitution that specifically prohibits federal officials, including the president, from accepting money or gifts from foreign representatives without the consent of Congress.
The US Supreme Court, which finally reached the debate, did not give a final decision, and in 2021 the judges basically declared that the case was no longer relevant, because Trump was no longer president. However, Democrats on the court disagreed.
“These payments were made as these governments advanced specific foreign policy goals to the Trump administration and even sometimes to President Trump himself, and as they pressured the United States for specific actions to advance the their own national policy goals,” the report said.
For example, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), one of China’s largest banks, leased office space from Trump Tower during Trump’s presidency. During Trump’s first year in office, the United States imposed sanctions on ICBC and several other Chinese banks over the latter’s support for North Korea’s nuclear program, members of the Republican Party called on Trump to apply of maximum pressure on these banks. However, Trump, the report emphasizes, turned a deaf ear and took no action that would affect one of the largest office tenants in Trump Tower.
It was previously reported that during the Trump era, the White House lost a folder with intelligence data on the Russian Federation.
Trump also admitted that he was blackmailing European leaders into the idea that the United States, under his leadership, would not defend NATO allies in the event of a Russian attack.
