Iranian media, citing emergency services, reported that at least 73 people were killed and another 170 were injured. Iranian authorities have already called the incident a terrorist attack.
According to preliminary information, two explosive devices were placed in bags that were left near the entrance to the cemetery. Apparently they were activated remotely.
The explosions occurred on the fourth anniversary of the death of General Qasem Soleimani. The US military killed a former foreign commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in a drone strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020.
Many people in Iran respect Soleimani as a martyr and gather at his grave to mark the anniversary of his death. Today, mourning events were also held there.
Qasem Soleimani led the Quds Force and conducted operations outside Iran. At the same time, he provided military assistance to Hamas and Hezbollah groups, as well as to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
