The container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU sounded the alarm twice in less than 24 hours, indicating attacks by four Houthi boats carried out with Iranian support, the US military said in a social media post.
The Houthis fired on the container ship and fired on American helicopters responding to the merchant ship’s alarm. Responding to the fire, US helicopters sank three of the four Houthi boats, while the fourth boat managed to escape, the US statement said.

On December 19, US Defense Secretary Austin announced the launch of Operation Prosperity Guardian to ensure security in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden amid Houthi attacks on merchant ships.
On December 30, the Singapore-flagged container ship Maersk Hangzhou reported being hit by missiles while passing through the southern Red Sea.
During the response, the USS Graveley shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. After the repelled attack, Maersk Hangzhou is fit for navigation and there are no casualties.
