However, the Council only partially accepted these two EU countries into the zone.
Border controls will be abolished at air and sea borders, and negotiations on land will continue in the new year. The decision to partially admit countries to Schengen has been approved for the first time in the history of the European Union.
From March 2024, border controls at air and sea borders will begin to be abolished.
Their accession will contribute to the development of travel, trade and tourism and will further strengthen the internal market, the European Commission notes.
The deadline for abolishing controls at land borders will continue to be discussed in 2024.
The Schengen area includes 27 countries (excluding Bulgaria and Romania).
