Belgium will begin its term as head of the Council of the European Union on January 1. The presidency of the Council of the European Union is held by member states in rotation for six months.
Belgium, as President of the Council of the EU, will support Ukraine as long as necessary. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced this on Saturday, December 30, in an interview with Le Soir newspaper.
“We have to do this. This is a financial issue and a military industry issue. Wars will be won with the help of industry. This is a decisive issue,” he said.
The Belgian Prime Minister stressed that the discussion of European leaders at the extraordinary EU summit on February 1 on financial aid to Ukraine will be very important. According to him, at this summit the heads of state and government of the European Union countries will discuss amendments to the EU budget for 2024-2027, taking into account the allocation of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine in worth 50 billion euros.
“The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, and I will work here until February 1 to reach an agreement between the 27 member states,” explained De Croo.
As you know, Prime Minister Viktor Orban is threatening to block all EU aid to Ukraine, as well as further movement of our country in the bloc, if EU leaders do not agree to re consider their entire strategy for supporting Kyiv.
Later, Orban said that Hungary would agree not to veto the EU’s proposal to allocate funds for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros, but that Brussels should unfreeze the 30 billion euros earmarked for Hungary.
