The war started by Russia against Ukraine showed that the European Union can be united when making political decisions.
The procedure for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union may take several years. Vera Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, said this on Saturday, December 30, in an interview with portal novinky.cz.
He also pointed out that the organization has performed well during the war and has proven its capacity since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The fact that our position will be very strong and united after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that one package of sanctions against Russia will be accompanied by another, and that states will be ready to contribute funds and provide weapons systems, which surprised not only a number of experts, but especially the Kremlin. Russia has launched an information campaign and wants to convince the Europeans that the Ukrainians are not worthy in their own state. Nothing happened here,” stressed Jourova.
The politician drew attention to Hungary’s “demarche” on the issue of support for Ukraine from the European Union.
“I was very relieved when Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán left the meeting room for coffee and thus allowed the accession negotiations with Ukraine to begin. However, nothing to do with the release of blocked money for in Hungary.” We have exhausted all options to force Hungary to make changes to its judicial system. It must be said that the Hungarian government really prepared them. For now, the changes are only on paper, but if they don’t work in practice, we can go back to blocking money,” said the Vice-President of the European Commission.
