Russia threatens that if tensions between Russia and NATO increase, Finland will be the first country to be affected.
Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that if a confrontation were to occur between NATO and Russia, Finland would be “the first to suffer.” This was reported by Euractiv on Thursday, December 28.
“We lived calmly, peacefully and unexpectedly found ourselves between Russia and NATO, as an important part of the Alliance, but they are our neighbors, and God forbid, if there is any aggravation, then Finland himself will be the first to suffer,” said the Russian diplomat.
He noted that Finland has maintained a neutral status for decades. However, the country’s membership in NATO “has made it a state that is hostile to Moscow.” Ulyanov also disputed his statements by the fact that the Finnish border is adjacent to Russia.
The Russian diplomat also called it a “serious challenge” that the United States and Finland are strengthening defense cooperation, which would open up access for the American military to facilities in the country.
It was previously reported that Russia will soon deploy its newest howitzers to the Northern Military District, near Finland and Norway.
