While the Biden administration was once focused on driving the Russians out of Ukraine, the focus is now shifting to protecting the territory.
Official Washington, in its policy regarding the war in Ukraine, is increasingly focusing on giving Ukraine the best position in “possible negotiations” with the Russian Federation and is discussing a transition to a more defensive approach. Politico wrote this on Wednesday, December 27, citing unidentified White House officials and a European diplomat in Washington.
It noted that American and European politicians are discussing Ukraine’s transition to a more defensive strategy after a “largely unsuccessful counter-offensive.” We are talking, in particular, about strengthening air defense systems and building fortifications, barbed wire, anti-tank barriers and canals along the Belarusian border.
“In addition, the Biden administration is committed to the rapid revival of Ukraine’s own defense industry to provide much-needed weapons, the replacement of which the US Congress is reluctant to approve,” the publication said.
The Biden administration official explained that the United States is not preventing Ukraine from preparing for future offensives and emphasized that no negotiations with Russia are planned at this time.
In turn, a European diplomat in Washington told Politico that the EU is also talking about accelerating Ukraine’s membership in NATO to “put the Ukrainians in a better position to negotiate” with Russia.
Among the reasons for this change of strategy, Politico points to the internal political situation in the United States (falling ratings of Biden, approaching the election in 2024) and Ukraine (here the publication writes about the “resistance” to Vladimir Zelensky on the part of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and the Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko).
The material also cited another source-based article by The New York Times that Russian President Vladimir Putin was reportedly ready for a “truce” if Kyiv and the West recognized illegally occupied Ukrainian territories as Russian.
We remind you that on Wednesday the United States announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth $250 million.
