The case concerns the shelling of Gostomel by the Russians in March 2022. Then civilians, especially those with German citizenship, suffered.
Germany has identified Russian military personnel involved in shelling in Gostomel, Kyiv region. This is the first war crimes case in Germany-led Ukraine. Spiegel reported this on Wednesday, December 27.
German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said the suspects in the shooting and the officers responsible have been identified.
The case of war crimes committed in Ukraine was opened in Germany in mid-July. This concerns the shelling of Gostomel by the Russians in March 2022. Then civilians, especially those with German citizenship, suffered.
“If we catch the perpetrators, we will bring charges. And if Ukraine or another country we work with catches these people, we will provide evidence to successfully file charges,” Buschmann said.
Federal prosecutors launched a so-called structural investigation. Its purpose is to first obtain evidence without specific suspects, for example by interviewing witnesses who have sought asylum in Germany.
A similar approach has been taken in relation to war crimes in Syria, where few convictions have been made.
Let’s recall that earlier the US Department of Justice announced charges against four Russian soldiers for war crimes against an American living in Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion. The case is the first time the US government has used legislation aimed at prosecuting those who have committed war crimes against American citizens abroad.
Ukrainian law enforcement officials have identified more than 400 war crimes suspects. Cases against 300 people are being heard in the courts, and 70 Russian war criminals have been convicted.
