Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine prompted Finland to renounce its neutrality and become a member of NATO and enter into a defense cooperation agreement with the United States.
In Ukraine there is now a war for the future of all of Europe. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen announced this in his Christmas speech to peacekeepers on Sunday, December 24. His appeal was published by the Finnish Ministry of Defense.
According to Häkkanen, “Russia’s policy has created a sense of insecurity and uncertainty in Europe, and indirectly in the whole world.”
“We have received painful proof that a great state can feel justified in interfering in the choices of its smaller neighbor and is willing to use military force to achieve its own goals,” he added.
The Finnish Minister of Defense emphasized that we are talking about the fate not only of Ukraine, but also of all states in neighboring Russia: “There is a war in Ukraine for the future of all of Europe.”
Vladimir Putin said that after joining NATO, Finland may have problems with the Russian Federation and announced the creation of the Leningrad Military District.
Finland is negotiating with the United States of America about the deployment of American troops on the territory of Finnish military bases.
