In Indonesia, on the island of Sulawesi, a fire occurred at the nickel plant of the Indonesian Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) company. Thirteen workers died and 46 others were injured, Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) reported on Sunday, December 24.
It stated that workers were repairing a nickel smelting furnace. During the work, the walls of the furnace collapsed, causing slag to leak out. It caused fire and death.
The incident killed nine Indonesian workers and four Chinese workers. It said there was no explosion at the facility.
IMIP is an industrial park owned by the Chinese company Tsingshan and its local partner Bintang Delapan Group, which produces stainless and carbon steel. ITSS is one of the tenants of the industrial park.
Earlier in Indonesia, at least 22 people died due to the eruption of Mount Merapi. Among the victims were many climbers.
