The head of the Ministry of Defense spoke about rebooting the department, changing personnel and reforming procurement.
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that people with “old habits” are now being “restricted” from the defense department. Almost all the deputy ministers were sacked. Umerov spoke about this in an interview with Suspilny, published on Saturday, December 23.
“There are many questions and many problems. We are squeezing all these people with old habits. And you will hear a lot of things that we do, you will hear a lot of accusations against us because we are squeezing these people,” said by Umerov, who responded to the question of procurement reform from the Ministry of Defense.
The head of the department noted that the Department of Procurement Policy was created in the Ministry of Defense with the aim of developing procurement policies, as well as launching procurement agencies – lethal and non-lethal.
“There will be a period of transition there, and there will be questions about how changes in personnel, or changes in leaders and commanders occur. That is, what I leave as a legacy, or when received I have it – there are And these questions we are making changes in procurement, the main thing is that we are not afraid to take responsibility, look at NATO standards, and attract our American and European partners to help us,” explained the minister.
In addition, the Ministry of Defense made a change in personnel. Of all the deputy ministers, only one remained – and he was responsible not for hiring, but for the military part.
As Umerov noted, a reboot took place “at the highest level.”
“And now, it is my new deputies’ responsibility to reboot the entire vertical. That is, we have done a horizontal reboot. Now, in the coming weeks and months, their task is to reboot these verticals . And they already have I started to do it. I believe that they are doing it slowly, “said Umerov, adding that it should be fast, clear and without compromise.
Let’s recall that the day before it was reported that the head of one of the Main Directorates of the Ministry of Defense was involved in a deal worth 1.5 billion Hryvnia.
Earlier, law enforcement officials exposed the former deputy minister of defense for embezzlement of nearly 1 billion Hryvnias. He holds the corresponding position from 2021 to 2023.
