Hamas leaders used this network to control organization and movement in the heart of the city.
The Israeli military blew up tunnels in Gaza City used by Hamas terrorist leaders, including leader Yahya Sinwar. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post on Thursday, December 21, citing a statement from the IDF.
It was noted that the Israel Defense Forces destroyed a secret underground network of tunnels captured on Wednesday.
The destruction of the underground structure occurred after the IDF took control of the Hamas-owned “leadership quarter” of Gaza City. According to the Israeli military, the network of branch tunnels contains apartments, offices and residences of senior officials of the Palestinian terrorist group.
Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif used this network to control the organization’s activities and movements in the center of Gaza City – hence the name Commander’s Square.
The Jerusalem Post quoted Colonel Benny Aharon as saying that the tunnels were used to store equipment taken from civilians, allowing Hamas leaders to hide there for long periods of time.
Earlier, Israel announced its readiness for a new ceasefire in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza. However, Hamas rejected this Israeli proposal.
