Tankers carrying five million barrels of Russian oil are running miles from their destination after US sanctions were imposed.
Following the new US sanctions, tankers carrying around 5 million barrels of Russian Sokol crude were stuck on their way to Indian refineries. Bloomberg reported this on Thursday, December 20.
It was noticed that the ships were idle miles from their destination. Moreover, in one of the cases – more than a month.
It is not clear what is holding the ships, but one reason could be US sanctions on tankers carrying Russian oil that violate price caps set by the G7 countries.
In mid-October, the United States Treasury imposed sanctions on the first two vessels linked to the Russian oil trade. This was followed by restrictions against three others in mid-November and three more in early December.
Six of the eight sanctioned vessels belong to the Russian state tanker company PJSC Sovcomflot.

Earlier, the US Treasury sent letters warning of jail time in case of violation of the price ceiling for Russian oil to 30 companies that control up to hundreds of oil tankers.
The EU also announced a strengthening of control over Russian oil sanctions.
