The death toll from the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that struck a mountainous region in northwest China late on December 18 has risen to at least 131, with around a thousand more injured. Xinhua reported this with reference to local authorities.
It was known that on the morning of December 20, 113 people were dead and 782 were injured in Gansu province. In neighboring Qinghai province, the earthquake killed 18 people, injured 198 and left 16 missing.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of about 10 km and almost on the administrative line between the two mountainous provinces of Gansu and Qinghai. The tremors were felt by residents of many areas of the same province. The earthquake caused widespread destruction and damage to houses, communications and power lines.
More than a thousand rescuers, military personnel and volunteers are reported to be participating in the search and rescue operations. High-tech space satellites for remote sensing of the Earth and unmanned aerial vehicles are used to search for victims.
The situation was aggravated by unfavorable weather conditions. Since the beginning of December, the temperature in the affected areas has dropped to minus 10°C. More than 5 thousand tents have been erected in the areas affected by the earthquake and dozens of sets of warm clothes have been delivered.
Let us remind you that in early December, the second earthquake occurred in three days in the capital of the Philippines.
It was also reported that the magnitude 5.1 earthquake, which occurred on the morning of December 4, caused fear among the residents of Istanbul. People left their homes and workplaces for safety reasons.
