The Vatican’s religious administration, as reported by the Catholic news agency Vatican News, published a corresponding declaration.
According to preliminary information, Pope Francis, who celebrated his 87th birthday the day before, made this decision.
The document, however, makes clear that “the Church’s traditional doctrine on marriage remains rigid, not allowing any type of liturgical rites that might cause confusion.”
The declaration of Fiducia supplicans, approved by the Pope and published this Monday, assures for the first time that before two people request a blessing, even if their status as spouses is “irregular,” an ordained priest will be able to give his consent. But this can happen without a gesture of pastoral intimacy containing elements even remotely similar to the marriage rite.
The value of this document is to offer a concrete and innovative contribution to the pastoral meaning of blessings, thereby expanding and enriching the classical understanding of blessings, Cardinal Fernandez explained at the beginning of the declaration on the pastoral meaning of blessings.
In February 2021, the Vatican’s religious body announced that blessing gay couples in the Catholic Church was impossible. Now the Vatican says the church has “expanded and enriched” its understanding of what a blessing is.
Couples in non-standard situations and couples of the same sex can be blessed without officially confirming their status and without somehow changing the ancient teaching of the Church on marriage, the declaration says.
