The border had to be closed because Russia did not change its behavior, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said.
The Finnish government must develop a systematic solution to the problem of the influx of asylum seekers at the Russian border. This was said by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Yle wrote.
According to him, the situation at the border has improved now compared to yesterday. “Unfortunately, the border has to be closed because Russia has not changed its behavior,” Orpo said.
Checkpoints will be closed for the next month. The Prime Minister is ready to make quick changes in the law due to the border situation, if necessary. Orpo also calls these Russian actions a hybrid attack.
“In my opinion, this is the right time. This is clearly an attack on the sovereignty of Finland and the EU,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Finland believes that a solution must be found on how to stabilize the border situation. In his opinion, one of the steps could be the consideration of asylum applications directly at the border.
“If the criteria for asylum are clearly not met, it should be possible to return the person immediately,” he added.
We remind you that on December 14, Finland announced the re-closing of checkpoints on the border with Russia. The reason for the repeated closures is the decision of the Russian Federation to allow illegal asylum seekers to cross the Finnish border again.
It was previously reported that Russia is recruiting foreign migrants detained during the Finnish border clearance to participate in the war in Ukraine.
