The US Congress has approved a law prohibiting presidents alone, without parliamentary approval, from deciding on the country’s withdrawal from NATO.

This was reported by the American publication The Hill.
It is noted that in this way the law emphasizes the commitment of Congress to the North Atlantic Alliance, which was the target of criticism by former US President Donald Trump during his tenure.
This bill was sponsored by Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mark Rubio (D-FL). Rubio said the law would be an important tool for congressional oversight.
We must ensure that we protect our national interests and protect the security of our democratic allies, he stressed.
It is noted that Trump, who is the leader of the presidential race from the Republican Party, made controversial messages on NATO on the eve of the US presidential elections in 2024:
- Trump supporters believe that his harsh statements and criticism have encouraged NATO member countries to meet their defense spending commitments, easing the burden on the United States;
- The ex-president’s critics say his rhetoric is weakening the unity and strength of the alliance. And they fear Trump will abandon U.S. mutual defense commitments or withdraw the U.S. from NATO entirely.
