The Vaalimaa and Nierala checkpoints on the Finnish-Russian border will operate from December 14 to January 14.
The Finnish government continued the operation of the Vaalimaa and Nierala checkpoints on the Russian border for a month. The country’s government reported this on its website.
There are eight checkpoints on the Finnish-Russian border. The remaining six will be closed until January 14, 2024.
“The border crossings will remain closed, except for the Vaalimaa and Nierala checkpoints, which will be opened on Thursday, December 14,” the message said.
The Finnish government’s decision is valid until January 14, 2024.
Applications from people seeking international protection at the land border in Russia will be accepted at operating checkpoints, the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs added.
Finnish Border Guard representative Mikko Lehmusna in a press briefing on Tuesday, December 12, Finland decided to open these border crossing points because they are most convenient for people living on both sides of the border and periodically visiting their relatives.
These checkpoints are more suitable for diplomatic and cargo traffic, the Finnish official added.
Let’s remember that at the end of November this year, the Finnish government decided to close all border crossings on the Russian border for two weeks.
