Kyiv did not fulfill three of the seven conditions of the European Commission, so “it makes sense to return here when Ukraine fulfills everything,” said Viktor Orban.
European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban before the start of the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels to convince him on the Ukraine issue. Politico and The Guardian reported this on Thursday, December 14.
According to Politico, on the evening of December 13, Michel, Macron, Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a meeting. They met to “agree on a common line” before the summit.
This morning Michel, Macron and Scholz held a working breakfast with Orban. The leaders tried to convince the Hungarian Prime Minister about the decisions he was blocking regarding Ukraine.
In turn, Orban, arriving at the EU summit, said that Hungary “will not move” on the issue of Ukraine’s membership.
“Enlargement is not a theoretical issue. Enlargement is a legally detailed merit-based process with requirements… there is no reason now to negotiate Ukraine’s membership. Not even to negotiate,” said Orban.
He claims that Kyiv has not fulfilled three of the seven conditions of the European Commission, so it makes sense to return to it when Ukraine fulfills all.
He also commented on Hungary’s position on approving aid funding to Ukraine.
“The money for Ukraine, in the near future, is already in the budget. If we want to provide a longer period and more money, we should do without the budget, and we support it,” promised the Hungarian prime minister .
We remind you that Viktor Orban believes that the rapid accession of Ukraine to the EU will have devastating consequences, which does not meet the interests of Hungary.
