The next step is to equip the border with state-of-the-art security and drone surveillance equipment. The project should be completed by 2025.
Estonia has completed construction of a 40-kilometer fence along its border with the Russian Federation. Politico reported this on Wednesday, December 13.
The publication states that Estonia wants to strengthen its border security as concerns grow about possible provocations from Russia. Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets said the goal is a high-tech, modern border infrastructure.
He said the EU’s eastern border, which runs along the border with Estonia, should be equipped with the latest security equipment and drone surveillance. The project should be completed by 2025.
“Covering nearly 340 kilometers of the border is no easy task, whether it’s the fencing infrastructure on the mainland or water monitoring systems,” Läänemets said.
According to him, Estonia has applied for funding from the EU to develop capabilities such as unmanned surveillance and radar position monitoring.
It was previously reported that Estonia is placing additional barriers on the border with Russia.
Estonian citizens are not advised to travel to Russia
