Since the beginning of the year, the cost of chicken eggs in Russia has increased by 46.2%, making it the most expensive food product in the country.
Prices for chicken eggs continue to rise in Russia, which is why the authorities intend to buy them from Turkey. However, they are more expensive there. The Moscow Times reported on the price psychosis for eggs in the Russian Federation on Wednesday, December 13.
According to Rosstat, for the week ending December 11, retail egg prices in Russia jumped another 4.55% after rising 4.23% last week and 15.1% in November. Since the beginning of the year, the cost of chicken eggs has increased by 46.2%, making it the most expensive food product in the country.
Notably one of the reasons is active supply reduction. The cost of eggs in the Russian Federation has risen sharply due to the fall of the ruble, increased tariffs and the personnel crisis. Russian egg production is highly dependent on imports: feed premixes, antibiotics, etc. came from another country.
“In Russia as a whole, egg production decreased by only 1.3% (since October), but in some regions, poultry farms recorded a complete fall in output.
To extinguish the “price fire” on the eve of the presidential “election” scheduled for spring, the Russian authorities are preparing emergency measures, opening the market for eggs from Turkey and Azerbaijan. 1.2 billion eggs will not be exempt from import duties for the period from January to June 2024.
The Russian Association of Retail Market Experts doubts that zeroing duties will solve the problem. “It is not clear how soon the first volumes of these products will begin to be imported, and at what cost, taking into account the expensive logistics,” said the head of the association, Andrei Karpov.
According to him, in the upper price segment – from 90 to 110 rubles. – retail chains have enough eggs. There is a shortage of products costing 60-70 rubles. Turkish eggs are more expensive than Russian eggs, so the proposal is unlikely to be effective, said Galina Bobyleva, general director of the Russian Poultry Union.
It was previously reported that inflation in Russia has exceeded price increases in Ukraine. Annual inflation in Russia set a new record – 6.99%. In the first week of November alone, the consumer price index jumped 0.42%.
World food prices fell by 11% over the year
