Unlocking the currency is expected to help Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s influence. But his senior assistant asked for up to 30 billion euros.
The European Commission has refused to unfreeze 10 billion euros for Hungary and is waiting for the latest move from Budapest to unlock access to funds frozen after Prime Minister Viktor Orban undermined democratic checks and balances. It was reported by Reuters.
Hungary’s latest judicial reforms must first be published in the country’s official journal to take effect, which would allow up to €10 billion of Budapest’s development aid to be unfrozen from the total bloc’s budget, the EC said.
The bloc hopes that unblocking the currency will help influence Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. But his senior assistant asked for up to 30 billion euros.
The EC responded by raising the stakes as the EU is locked in a battle with a deepening Hungary over support for Ukraine, which Orban has threatened to veto at the bloc’s leaders’ summit in Brussels on December 14. -15.
We remind you that Hungary has said that it will agree not to veto the proposal of the European Union to allocate funds for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros, but that Brussels must unfreeze the 30 billion euros assigned to Hungary .
As you know, Prime Minister Viktor Orban is threatening to block all EU aid to Ukraine, as well as further movement of our country in the bloc, unless EU leaders agree to reconsider their entire strategy for supporting Kyiv.
