This is the opinion of the new head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn.
The existence of an official single channel of communication in a warring country makes sense, but if the majority of Ukrainians receive information from anonymous Telegram channels, then “something is wrong with the marathon,” Yurchyshyn said in a conversation with Interfax-Ukraine.
He believes that “we need to resolve the issue of either greater balance, or a more proactive position, or come to the understanding that, unfortunately, this filigree method is not fulfilling its function now and look for some other format.”
In the State Budget for 2024, the Verkhovna Rada has allocated almost UAH 2 billion for the national telethon “Unified News”. First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alexander Kornienko said in an interview with LIGA.net in November that not all of these funds will go to the channels.
The KIIS survey recorded a drop in trust (from May 2022 to October 2023) in the telethon – among believers it decreased from 69% to 48%.
