Finland is considering the possibility of trying neo-Nazi Petrovsky himself

Finnish law provides the possibility to investigate terrorist crimes committed abroad.

Finland can independently prosecute a Russian neo-Nazi based on the DSRG group Russian Jan Petrovsky (changed his name to Vojislav Torden), whom Ukraine accuses of war crimes. This was reported by the Finnish publication Yle on Saturday, December 9.

After the Finnish court released Petrovsky from custody, refusing to agree to his extradition to Ukraine, the Russian was immediately detained by representatives of the border service. The agency has started formal proceedings to establish the legality of the Russian citizen’s stay in Finland.

The Finnish Central Criminal Police, under the leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office, began another investigation “in complete silence,” said Deputy Prosecutor General Jukka Rappe.

He noted that law enforcement officials must decide whether it is possible to bring Petrovsky to justice in Finland for crimes committed in Ukraine. Ukraine has previously provided the relevant materials.

“This decision will be my responsibility when sufficient explanations are received on this issue. Hopefully we will receive it at the beginning of the week,” the official stressed.

Local law enforcement, according to Finnish law, can investigate terrorist crimes committed abroad if appropriate, but the complexity of this case lies in the fact that Petrovsky is not Finnish.

The case could become a precedent for the Finnish law enforcement system.

We remind you that the Supreme Court of Finland refused to extradite Jan Petrovsky to Ukraine. The reason for the refusal seems to be “the conditions of prisons in Ukraine.”

Subsequently, Ukraine responded to the Finnish court’s refusal to extradite the so-called Vojislav Torden.
