The draft resolution was prepared by the United Arab Emirates and provided for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. However, it was not accepted because the United States of America vetoed it on December 8. Great Britain abstained from voting, while the remaining 13 members of the Security Council voted in favor. This was reported by Reuters.
According to the Washington representative, this resolution seems to be unbalanced and divorced from reality. The delegate said an immediate cessation of hostilities would only “sow the seeds of another war” as Hamas was not truly seeking peace.
However, the United States supports a pause in fighting because it will protect civilians and free hostages captured by Islamists during the October 7 attack on Israel.
As you know, the UN Security Council tried for the fifth time to adopt a resolution on the war in the Middle East.
Let us remind you that the White House has already developed a multi-stage plan for managing the Gaza Strip after the war. It is based on control of the territory by the renewed Palestinian Authority, which controls the West Bank.
