These systems were developed specifically for Ukraine to detect and intercept enemy drones, in particular Shahed-136, the press service of the US Naval Air Systems Command reports.
It is noted that the development, production and supply of Vampire systems occurs in an extremely compressed time frame under the leadership of the special Precision Weapons Development Team PMA-242 of the US Navy.
We delivered the first four systems in just six months, using an innovative contracting strategy and working diligently to keep pace with rapid system development,” said Kevin Raspet, deputy foreign sales program manager.
“Military” noted that they were included in the US military aid package in the amount of $1.3 billion, announced on July 19, 2023. However, the number of installations planned for transfer was not indicated at that time. The United States Department of Defense first announced the start of their use by the Ukrainian military on September 1.
Along with the new batch of equipment, the first APKWS missiles equipped with a contactless detonator should arrive in the coming weeks. A non-contact fuse with a radio frequency sensor should significantly increase the efficiency of the complex.
