The Oxford English Dictionary named “rizz” as the word of the year 2023, which is very popular among young people in the West.
Rizz means that a person has the style, charm, charisma and attractiveness to attract and attract a sexual partner. Rizz is nothing but a radical abbreviation of the word charisma. This slang word can also be used as a verb. Rizzing up means displaying the above qualities, including making an irresistible impression by maintaining an engaging conversation. This buzzword has gained wide popularity among TikTok users. Content with the hashtag Rizz has received billions of views on this social network.
What did you choose?
The list of finalists included eight words, including swiftie (an ardent fan of the singer Taylor Swift), beige flag (translated as a beige flag, but we are talking about the character: this is the name for a potential partner who turns out to be boring and completely unoriginal) and situation (an informal romantic or intimate relationship without certain responsibilities between partners).
The short list of eight words was selected by language experts at Oxford University Press (which publishes the Greater Oxford Dictionary). The public was then asked to choose four options that qualified for the finals, after which experts made the final choice.
The president of Oxford Languages Kasper Grathwohl said that the popularity of the expression rizz proves that words and phrases originating from the culture of the internet are increasingly entering the everyday vernacular.
Different versions
Not all dictionaries recognize new slang expressions as words of the year. In November, Collins Dictionary named artificial intelligence as the expression of 2023.
In 2022, the Oxford Dictionary named “goblin mode” as the word of the year. A slang term, it means “a type of behavior based on wanton self-indulgence, laziness, impudence, or greed, and generally violating the norms of society.”
The expression first appeared on Twitter in 2009, but went viral on social media in February 2022 after many countries eased coronavirus lockdowns and people began leaving their homes more often.
The Oxford Dictionary says that this expression “seems to reflect the condition of people who reject the idea of returning to normal life.”
In 2021, the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year is vaccine. Lexicographers have noticed that until recently the word vax was relatively rare in their database. But by September 2021, people used it 72 times more often than the previous year.
In Ukraine in 2022, the word of the year according to the Myslovo dictionary is the phrase “Russian warship, go to hell.” This is exactly what the Ukrainian defender of Zmeiny Island told the Russian invaders.
