The Israeli military is considering the possibility of flooding tunnels used by the radical Hamas group in the Gaza Strip, WSJ reports, citing American authorities.

For this purpose, the Israel Defense Forces installed a pumping system. According to WSJ, in mid-November, the military installed at least five pumps about one and a half kilometers north of the Al-Shati refugee camp.
It is unclear whether the IDF will resort to this option before all the hostages held by Hamas are released.
Under the Gaza Strip there is an extensive network of tunnels with a total length of up to 500 km.
In early December, the IDF Corps of Engineers began a large-scale operation to destroy Hamas tunnels in areas of the Gaza Strip – more than 100 tunnels have already been destroyed.
Former IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan said that Israeli soldiers will not enter terrorist tunnels.
It would be a big mistake to enter the tunnel (where Hamas is hiding and waiting). Wisdom is to find the entrances and seal them, or to blow smoke that will cause the enemy to come out or harm him. You don’t fight inside the tunnels, you counter the threat of the tunnels,” he said.
