The Pentagon recognizes that China’s industry far exceeds the potential of not only the United States, but also the combined output of its major allies in Europe and Asia.
American companies cannot produce weapons fast enough to meet global demand, in part because of the wars in Ukraine and Israel. This is stated in the draft of the first National Defense Industrial Strategy in US history, reports Politico.
It was noted that the US National Defense Industrial Strategy will be announced in the coming weeks by the head of the Pentagon’s procurement department, William LaPlante.
The draft document states that, as it stands, the US defense industrial base “does not have the capacity, capability, responsiveness, or resilience necessary to meet the full range of defense production requirements at the necessary speed and size.”
It is also stated that America creates the best weapons in the world, but cannot make them fast enough.
“This disparity constitutes a growing strategic risk as the United States faces requirements to support active combat operations … while containing a larger and more advanced technological threat to the Indo-Pacific region. Pacific,” the publication quoted the text of the draft document as saying.
At the same time, the Pentagon admitted that China’s industry “significantly exceeds the potential of not only the United States, but also the total volume of production of our main allies in Europe and Asia.”
The COVID pandemic has exposed weaknesses in the supply chain, the report said. Then Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Hamas’ attack on Israel “showed a different set of industrial needs and associated risks” as the US tried to produce weapons to support Ukraine and Israel.
“It has become clear that inadequate production and supply capabilities are a deep-rooted problem at all levels of supply chains,” the report said.
To address this problem, the US Department of Defense “will build more robust and innovative supply chains”, invest in small businesses and place more emphasis on innovation.
“We must encourage participants of all types: large and small, domestic and foreign, and those not affiliated with the Department of Defense or Defense Production,” the report also said.
The Pentagon states that the US armed forces must have the “logistics to deter potential adversaries, and, if necessary, to defeat them in battle.”
At the same time, the authors of the draft document recognize that this call to action may have great value, but “the consequences of inaction or failure are greater.”
