Due to the location of the earthquake’s epicenter, a tsunami can be expected in the southern Philippines, as well as in parts of Indonesia, Palau and Malaysia.
A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 was recorded off the coast of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. The US Geological Survey reported this on Saturday, December 2.
The shock occurred at 22:37 local time (16:37 Kyiv time). Its epicenter is at a depth of about 33 kilometers.
More than two dozen strong aftershocks are known. The magnitude of the strongest is 6.4. Magnitude greater than 5.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that due to the strength and location of the earthquake, large waves can be expected in the southern Philippines, as well as parts of Indonesia, Palau and Malaysia.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recommends that residents of the southern coast immediately evacuate. However, there have been no reports of strong waves or casualties.
It will be recalled that in November, a magnitude 7 earthquake occurred in the Vanuatu region in the South Pacific Ocean. There was no tsunami threat then.
Also last month, an earthquake in western Nepal left at least 22 people dead and dozens injured.
